SJC Mourns Passing of First Athletic Director Frank Mulzoff

Written by Andrew Capitelli (SJC-LI Sports Information)

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) athletic department and college community is saddened to hear of the passing of former athletic director Frank Mulzoff, who died peacefully on November 30, 2017, with his wife by his side.

Mulzoff arrived at St. Joseph's College in 1980 and laid the groundwork for a respected athletic program. A former St. John's University basketball standout (1948-51), Mulzoff established the SJC men's basketball team in 1980. Initially operating as a club program, the team joined the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 1981-82 and remained a member until the 1997-98 season when it joined the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

In his six seasons as head coach of the team, Mulzoff posted a 67-68 overall record and coached several Golden Eagles Hall of Famers including former all-time leading scorer Fred Ostrick. Mulzoff himself was a member of the Hall of Fame's inaugural induction class of 2008.

As the college's first athletic director, Mulzoff is credited with establishing the department's path to NCAA Division III membership. Today, SJC boasts 20 NCAA-sponsored programs and participates in the Skyline and New Jersey Athletic Conferences.
