Softball Drops Two to John Jay on Thursday

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team drops back-to-back games in a non-conference matchup against John Jay on Thursday afternoon.

Game One:
Key Players:
  • Sophomore Mariah Salvatto was 1-3 at the plate with a double to center field resulting in a run scored 

  • Senior Elena Serio recorded one hit to go along with one run scored

  • Sophomore Cailyn Rodriguez totaled one hit while also tallying one RBI

  • Junior Samantha Dimezza contributed two hits on three plate appearances while adding one RBI

  • Kelly Fajardo of the Bloodhounds provided two hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs

  • John Jay's Maleea Gallaspy had three hits while also adding one run scored 

How it happened:
  • The first inning was scoreless between the two teams until Fajardo tripled to left field bringing home Sidney Bankston to score, prior to John Jay singling up the middle for another run to score in the inning.

  • The Golden Eagles would respond in the same inning as a Salvatto double would set up Rodriguez to single to right center driving in Salvatto to score

  • In the top of the third inning, the Bloodhounds would score three runs highlighted by a Farjado double which eventually saw Gallaspy scoring in the fourth inning from an error by St. Joseph's 

  • St. Joseph's would look to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh as Dimezza doubled down the left field line allowing Serio to score but it wasn't enough as John Jay closed out the inning with a 6-2 victory 

Game two:
Key Players:
  • Junior Kate Kiernan led the Golden Eagles with one hit on two at-bats, one run scored, and one RBI

  • Freshman Kimberly Ehman added one run scored and one RBI for St. Joseph's 

  • Junior Julia Ruocchio totaled one hit on three plate appearances while also providing one RBI

  • Jordyn Prince of John Jay tallied two hits in the game while also adding two RBIs and one run scored 

  • The Bloodhounds Gallaspy had one hit, two RBIs and one run scored 

How it happened:
  • The Bloodhounds wasted no time as they started the game off strong scoring in the top of the first with Gallaspy coming home off an error, the Golden Eagles responded quickly as a double to left field from Kiernan drove in Ehman to score tying the game

  • St. Joseph's got into a rhythm early when Emily Bazarewski scored in the next inning off a groundout followed by Kiernan scoring in the third inning 

  • While the fourth inning was quiet for both teams in the fifth inning John Jay would take the lead as a double brought in one run to score followed by another double that brought two more runs to score in the inning taking the lead 4-3

  • The final inning of the game saw the Bloodhounds build on their lead as an error by St. Joseph's drove in two more runs securing another victory for John Jay, 6-3
