Softball Suffers Sixth Conference Loss of Season

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team fails to snap their losing streak with back-to-back losses to Manhattanville on Sunday.

Game One:
Key Players:
  • Junior Kate Kiernan allowed three hits and no runs scored in two innings pitched 

  • Jayleen Torres of Manhattanville went 2-3 at the plate while recording one RBI, two runs scored, and four stolen bases 

  • The Valiants' Sarah Harker totaled two hits on four plate appearances to go along with one RBI and two runs scored 

  • Sarah Walsh was 1-2 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and one stolen base

How it happened:
  • The Valiants opened the game with a Harker triple to left field which would see one run score, as Harker came home as well on a throwing error 

  • As two more runs scored a few minutes later courtesy of multiple errors on the behalf of St. Joseph's, Samantha Reyer of Manhattanville singled through the left which resulted in one run batted in as the first inning ended with a 5-0 lead

  • In the bottom of the second Walsh singled up the middle and another run was scored due to an error, moments later the batter was walked which saw Walsh score on the play due to a wild pitch

  • Manhattanville kept the pressure on as they would go on to score six total runs in the bottom of the third highlighted by a double from Melissa Lopez that brought in one run, an RBI single from Torres, and a Cady Sickler single that brought home another run. The Golden Eagles would walk two batters later in the inning and a groundout saw one more run score securing game one for the Valiants 13-0.

Game two:
Key Players:
  • Junior Julia Ruocchio recorded one hit on two plate appearances 

  • Freshman Kimberly Ehman and Junior Madison DiPalo each added one hit

  • Sarah Harker was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored

  • Samantha Walsh tallied one hit with two runs scored and one RBI

  • Samantha Reyer had one hit, one run scored, and four RBIs

How it happened:
  • Manhattanville found their offensive flow early as the game opened with the Valiants' scoring two runs courtesy of a SAC fly, and an SJLI error

  • Moments later, Reyer would hit a two-RBI single that allowed the hitter to advance to second due to an error and Melissa Lopez hit a single that brought another run in courtesy of an error and closed the inning 6-0

  • The game remained quiet until the fourth inning when Walsh doubled for the Valiants bringing another run in, as another error on the Golden Eagles in the next at-bat saw another runner score 

  • Reyer would reach on a fielders choice later in the inning that brought home the final two runs of the game as Manhattanville closed out the game 10-0

Next up, the Golden Eagles return to their home field where they prepare for a non-conference matchup with New Paltz on Wednesday, April 19 at 4:00 pm.
