Softball Topped by New Paltz on Wednesday

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team falters in back-to-back games to New Paltz on Wednesday evening. 

Game One:
Key Players:
  • Sophomore Emily Fenezia recorded one hit and one RBI

  • Junior Riley Lim-Ellis totaled one hit and one RBI

  • Juniors Kate Kiernan and Madison DiPalo each added one hit and one run scored 

  • Jackie Rometo was 1-2 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBIs

  • Jaycee Filancia went 1-3 while adding one run scored and four RBIs

How it happened:
  • New Paltz started the game with three runs scored in the top of the first, highlighted by a couple of errors on behalf of St. Joseph's 

  • In the second inning, a Rometo double through the left side brought home three runs to score, followed by a Filancia single that drove in two more runs, bringing the Hawks to lead to 10-0

  • The scoring output didn't stop in the fourth inning as the bases were loaded and runners advanced due to a passed ball scoring another run, prior to a groundout allowing another run to score

  • As the Golden Eagles finally found the scoring column with a Fenzia single to left field allowing Kiernan to score, with Lim-Ellis singling up the middle shortly after driving in a DiPalo score. 

  • St. Joseph's scoring effort fell short in the final inning as the Hawk secured the 12-2 victory in game one 

Game two:
Key Players:
  • Sophomore Emily Fenezia was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with one walk, while adding four runs scored 

  • Sophomore Mariah Salvatto tallied two hits and three RBIs

  • Junior Riley Lim-Ellis secured one hit, one run scored, and two RBIs

  • Juliet Bernstein recorded three hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs

  • Jackie Rometo added two hits and two runs scored 

  • Sydney Bonewit went 1-3 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI

How it happened:
  • The Golden Eagles started the game off strong after holding the Hawks scoreless in the first inning with a Salvatto double driving in Fenezia to score

  • In the top of the second New Paltz rallied with a sacrifice flyout to left field allowing Bonewit to score and a single to left field that brought home Bernstein for an additional run propelling New Paltz ahead, 2-1

  • A Lim-Ellis ground out tied the game at two as Fenezia came home to score until an error by St. Joseph's saw another run score for the Hawks taking the lead 3-2

  • The Hawks kept the pressure on SJLI as Jillian Shelbourne hit an RBI single to right field with Bernstein adding a two-RBI double to right-center 

  • St. Joseph's responded in the same inning with a Lim-Ellis double to right field driving in Fenezia to score, followed by an RBI single from Salvatto 

  • As the Hawks held on to a 6-4 lead, New Paltz added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning totaling the score to 8-4 heading into the final inning 

  • In the final inning, Salvatto reached first on an error with Fenezia scoring as the Golden Eagles were only down three but it was too late as New Paltz recorded the final out securing the game-two victory 8-5

Next up, the Golden Eagles prepare for a Skyline Conference match-up against Purchase College on Friday, April 21 at 4:00 pm.
