Softball Picks Up Skyline Sweep over Purchase, 11-4, 9-0

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team picked their first Skyline Conference wins with a doubleheader sweep of SUNY Purchase on Friday afternoon.

Game One SJLI 11, Purchase 4:
Key Players:
  • Junior Kate Kiernan was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored

  • Junior Riley Lim-Ellis totaled two hits with an RBI and a run scored

  • Junior Julia Ruocchio went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. In the circle, she earned her first win of the season allowing four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts

How it happened:
  • The Panthers opened the scoring with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first. St. Joseph's answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning highlighted by RBI singles from Lim-Ellis and Kiernan

  • A two-RBI single up the middle from Antonia Busa in the bottom of the second extended the SJLI lead to 6-2

  • A defensive miscue in the top of the fourth led to two unearned Panther runs inching the visitors to within two, 6-4

  • Kiernan, Adrianna Ciancuielli, and Madison DiPalo all knocked in runs to cap the scoring in the bottom of the fourth at 11-4

Game two SJLI 9, Purchase 0:
Key Players:
  • Ruocchio added three more hits and knocked in four runs. The junior earned her second win on the day scattering four hits while striking out seven

  • Sophomore Emily Fenezia was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored

  • Kiernan and Cailyn Rodriguez both recorded a hit and two runs scored 

How it happened:
  • A two-out two-RBI single up the middle from Ruocchio put the Golden Eagles on the board in the bottom of the second

  • Five hits in the bottom of the third resulted in five runs for the Golden Eagles. An RBI single from Samantha Dimezza sent home Busa who singled to start the inning. Fenezia followed with a two-RBI double to left before Ruocchio's double to the left-center gap brought in two more runs for a 7-0 lead

  • Fenezia knocked in two more runs in the fourth with a single through the left side before Ruocchio pitched around a couple of singles in the top of the fifth to secure the 9-0 win

Next up, the Golden Eagles continue Skyline Conference play when they travel to take on Farmingdale St. on Sunday, April 23 at 12:00 pm.
