Women's Soccer Capture 2-0 Victory in Season Opener

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) women's soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 victory over New Jersey City on Friday afternoon.

  • Senior Julia Cruz led the Golden Eagles with three shots on goal, contributing one goal and one assist

  • Freshman Alexis Pasciuta tallied one goal on one shot on goal in collegiate debut

  • Sophomore Kristin Vahle produced a shutout tallying six saves facing six shots on goal 

  • Bella Moore paced the Gothic Knights wit two shots on goal

How it happened
  • As the game remained scoreless through the first 30 minutes of action, it looked as if the Gothic Knights would pull ahead first until Vahle made two key saves within minutes of each other 

  • Shortly after a cross into the box saw Cruz gain control and fire a shot into the back of the nets giving SJLI the 1-0 lead with just five minutes remaining in the first half 

  • With three minutes remaining in the half Cruz gains control of the ball in the box off a deflection, where the senior finds Pasciuta wide open in front of the net for the Golden Eagles second goal

  • The Golden Eagles defense was able to hold strong as they held of NJCU's offensive attack in the second half, securing the first win of the season

  • The Golden Eagles recorded six saves to NJCU's four
