Women's Soccer Eliminated in OT Thriller

When and Where:

October 28, 2023 – Patchogue, NY

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) women's soccer team fell short in the first round of the Skyline Conference Championship with a 1-0 defeat to USMMA on Saturday afternoon.

Top performers
  • United State Merchant Marine Academy's Marina Ronzoni scored the game-winning lone goal of the match

  • SJLI's Ana Lombardo, Emma Furey, and Alyssa Ramcke registered one shot on goal

How it happened
  • The first half saw a stalemate, with each team registering shots on goal that would be turned away by the keepers

  • As both teams fought for a chance to find the back of the net first, the Golden Eagles found Lombardo up the left side with just the keeper to beat, but it was kept out by Ronnie Florek

  • With the first overtime period underway, it was Ronzoni who found space for a chance and was able to put over the head of Alana Downey for the first goal of the game in the 99th minute

  • St. Joseph's looked to equalize the game in the final 10 minutes of action when Ramcke found the ball in the box to take the last opportunity of the game but the USMMA defense held strong to secure the 1-0 victory and advanced to the next round

Notes
  • SJLI finished with 11 shots with USMMA accumulating 13

  • The Golden Eagles added seven corner kicks compared to Merchant Marine Academy's three

  • One yellow card was issued in the match
