Men's Basketball Stopped by St. Elizabeth

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team suffered a 61-55 loss to St. Elizabeth University in a non-conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon.

Top performers:
  • Junior Ryan McNeely led the Golden Eagles with 16 points, shooting 3-for-4 from three-point range and 5-for-9 overall while adding six rebounds
  • Junior Spencer Malloy added 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds
  • Graduate Liam Sheehy contributed a team-high nine rebounds
  • D'Angelo Blackmond recorded a double-double of 20 points (10-for-14 from the field) and 16 rebounds for St. Elizabeth, both of which were game-highs
  • Pierre Harden and Jonathan Ramos added double-digit points for the Eagles, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively 
How it happened:
  • St. Joseph's took an early lead of 13-6 in the first
  • St. Elizabeth came within three (13-10) before McNeely made three straight three-point shots as part of a 9-2 run for SJLI to go up 22-12
  • McNeely scored 11 consecutive points for St. Joseph's, with his final three-pointer of the run at 8:47 giving the Golden Eagles what would be their largest lead of the game of 10 points
  • SJLI went back up by 10 with 7:22 on the clock on a made free throw by Graduate Matthew Hirdt, then SEU went on a 12-6 run, with eight points scored by Blackmond, to trim SJLI's lead to four, 29-25, before they finished the half up by five, 30-25
  • St. Joseph's led by as much as nine in the second half, then had a lead of seven, 42-35, at the 12:33 mark on a Sheehy layup
  • St. Elizabeth went on a 6-0 run to trim their deficit to one, 42-41, then SEU took their first lead since they led 4-2, 2:18 minutes into the game on a layup for Ramos at 5:03
  • Ramos made two additional layups, then a pair of made free throws by Nate Thompson for St. Elizabeth at the 3:37 mark gave SEU a seven-point lead for their largest advantage of the game, 55-48
  • A pair of Malloy layups brought SJLI within three, 55-52, but St. Elizabeth went 6-for-10 at the free-throw line in the final two and a half minutes to come away with a 61-55 win
Notes:
  • St. Joseph's shot 31.7% from the field, while St. Elizabeth finished the game with a 41.1% shooting percentage
  • SEU went 0-for-15 from three-point territory on the game, while the Golden Eagles shot 4-for-18 for a 22.2% percentage from beyond the arc
  • In the second half, St. Elizabeth shot 45.8% from the field and limited SJLI to a 26.7% shooting percentage
  • McNeely scored 11 of the Golden Eagles' 30 points in the first half, going 4-for-4 from the field that included three made shots from long range
  • Blackmond scored 14 of St. Elizabeth's 25 points in the first half, shooting 7-for-9 from the field
