Three Golden Eagles in Double Figures as Men's Basketball Beats John Jay

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team defeated John Jay, 84-57, in a non-conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Wednesday.

Top performers:
  • Junior Xavier Allen had a double-double of a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles

  • Junior Spencer Malloy was 8-for-10 from the field and scored 17 points to go along with six rebounds and a pair of blocks

  • Senior Jake Guadiello added 15 points for St. Joseph's with five assists and four steals, and Graduate Liam Sheehy added eight points and eight rebounds

  • The Bloodhounds were led by Jayson Delgado, who scored 16 points while contributing five rebounds and four steals

  • Jordan Evelyn and Isaac Holmes each contributed double-digit points for John Jay, with Evelyn providing 14 points and a team-high five assists and Holmes scoring 12 points

How it happened:
  • St. Joseph's jumped out in front 11-0 in the first three and a half minutes of the game

  • The hosts proceeded to go on a 17-0 run to take a commanding 28-3 lead that was capped by Sheehy's three-point play at the 7:53 mark

  • SJLI took their largest lead of the half for the second time on a two-pointer by Malloy at the 4:12 mark that extended the lead to 29 (39-10)

  • John Jay went on a 10-5 run to finish the half, but St. Joseph's went into the break up 44-20

  • SJLI scored 12 of the first 17 points to begin the second half, with St. Joseph's going up 56-25 on a three-point shot by Freshman Justin Turner at the 14:46 mark to finish the run

  • The Bloodhounds went on an 8-0 run to get within 23, then St. Joseph's responded with a 7-2 run before they took their largest lead of the game

  • A pair of layups for Allen put the Golden Eagles up 67-35, which represented their largest lead of the game of 32 with 8:27 remaining

  • Following a John Jay timeout, the visitors went on an 8-0 run before SJLI went back up by 30 (73-43) on a three-pointer by Allen with 5:44 on the clock.

  • A dunk by Sheehy at the 2:21 mark put St. Joseph's back up by 30 (84-54), then proceeded to finish the game with a final score of 84-57

Notes:
  • St. Joseph's shot 50.8% from the field and 43.5% from three-point range

  • Jon Jay was limited to a 28.4% shooting percentage while shooting just 20% from beyond the arc

  • The visitors posted a 73.7% (14-for-19) free throw percentage, while SJLI shot 66.7% (8-for-12) in free throws

  • St. Joseph's out-rebounded John Jay, 48-38 while out-scoring the visitors 38-24 in the paint

  • Evelyn went 10-for-12 in free throws for John Jay
