Men's Basketball Takes Down Yeshiva for First Conference Victory

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball picked up their first Skyline Conference victory against Yeshiva University on Saturday night. 

Top performers:
  • Junior Xavier Allen had a game-high 26 points and three steals, with a team-best three assists

  • Graduate Liam Sheehy had a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with five points  

  • Junior Spencer Malloy and junior Ryan McNeely turned in 13 and 12 points, respectively

  • Max Zakheim led the Maccabees in scoring with 23 points on 9-17 shooting 

  • Zevi Samet and Matan Zucker contributed with 18 and 3 points, respectively, while grabbing seven rebounds apiece  

How it happened: 
  • St. Joseph's scored first, building an early six-point lead, 10-4, two minutes into the game

  • Zucker would give the Maccabees their first lead of the game at the 12:09 mark, Allen answered with a jumper moments later giving the Golden Eagles the lead back 

  • The teams went on to exchange baskets throughout the first half with no team gaining an edge with a score tied at 38 at the break 

  • The game would remain close until the Golden Eagles dropped in 15 unanswered points sparked by a jumper by McNeely at the 10:51 mark 

  • Zakheim would stop the Golden Eagles' run with a triple cutting deficit to just 10, 65-55 

  • Later in the half, YU's Samet hit three free throws bringing the lead down to nine with two minutes left

  • McNeely knocked down a three and hit a free throw in the final minute to ice the game for SJLI

Notes: 
  • St. Joseph's shot 52.8% from the field, while Yeshiva finished the game with a 43.6% shooting percentage

  • In the first half, the Golden Eagles shot 42.9% from three-point range, while holding the Maccabees to 19.2% 

  • SJLI received scoring help from their bench with 19 points, while the Maccabees had zero bench points 

  • The Golden Eagles held the lead for 69.5% of the game, with 13 points being their largest lead
