Golden Eagles Best Lehman in Coaches Vs. Cancer Opener

Bronx, NY| Sophomore Megan Steinman broke the SJC single-game points record as the St. Joseph's College women's basketball team picked up an 88-64 non-conference win over Lehman College on the opening day of the CUNY Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament hosted by Lehman.

The Golden Eagles advance to the championship game and improve to 2-7 on the year as the Lightning move to 0-9.

Steinman's 42 points eclipsed Andrea Iavarone's 39-point performance against SJC-Brooklyn in 2018.

In her first appearance with the Golden Eagles, freshman Alyssa Adomaites dropped in 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field and dished a team-best six assists.

Freshman point guard Julianna Knice totaled eight points with five assists. Freshman Catherine Siounis provided a team-high 10 rebounds.
Nina Gill led the Lightning with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Shanya Gonzalez finished with 18 points and Fatomata Trawalleh rounded out the top scorers with 14 points.

The Golden Eagles led wire-to-wire building a 15-5 lead midway through the first quarter. Four unanswered points with less than three minutes left in the frame saw the Lightning inch to within three, 18-15, but SJC outscored Lehman 7-2 down the stretch to head into the second quarter ahead 25-17.

Steinman knocked down 10 points in the second guiding the Golden Eagles to a 46-33 lead at the break.

Following a closely played third quarter, the Golden Eagles held Lehman to just 25.0% from the field to cruise to an 88-64 win.

St. Joseph's finished shooting 45.9% from the field while holding the hosts to just 35.6%. SJC was a force down low with a 38-36 rebounding edge and 32-18 advantage in the paint.

The Golden Eagles will face Drew University in the championship game at 1:00 pm on Sunday, December 29.
