Rowan Owls Out-Hoot the Eagles for Lopsided Win

Glassboro, N.J. - It was a tough outing last night for the Golden Eagles' women's soccer team (1-5-1) as the played a red hot Rowan University (5-2) squad that was too much to handle last they fell to a score of 7-0.

Junior keeper Katie McGarrell (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) had a challenging time stopping the Rowan offense, allowing five goals in her 70-plus minutes played.  Five goals may seem a lot to let hit the back of the net, but McGarrell was able to save six of the eleven blazing shots.  The former Newfield High School product was staring down the barrel the entire game, and without her in goal, the score could have been a lot worse.

As the game started to wind down, Coach Lee decided to give his backup freshman goalie some live action.  Hannah Steffens (Northport, N.Y./Smithtown Christian) was plugged into the game shy of 20 minutes left in the match.  The Owls were on the attack once again, registering four shots on goal.  Steffens managed to save two of the shots, but a breakaway chance and a rocket from 18 yards out managed to pass by the freshman keeper.

The Golden Eagles only managed to get off two shots on goal in the contest by juniors Jessica Cordano (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) and Joann Murino (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot).  However the ball could not roll their way, as the opposing goalie was able to snag the ball out of the air both times.

Despite the poor showing by St. Joseph's College, the team looks to turn it around in their first Skyline Conference match of the season this weekend.  Come support the women's soccer team on Saturday, September 20 at 1:00 p.m. as they face the Sage College Gators (2-2-1) at the SJC Outdoor Field Complex.
