Baseball Opens Skyline Schedule With a Pair of Wins Over USMMA

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) baseball team opened up its Skyline Conference schedule with a pair of wins over the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Gregg Alfano Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles started the day with a 10-2 win in game one and rolled through the Mariners for a 14-5 win in game two improving to 3-4 on the season with a 2-0 conference mark. USMMA falls to 5-11 overall, 0-2 Skyline.

SJC 10, USMMA 2

The Mariners struck first when Joey Zanetti belted a leadoff home run to left, but SJC quickly responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

A three-run bottom of the third highlighted by a two-run blast from Ryan Decoursey (2-for-3, 2R, RBI) put the Golden Eagles ahead 4-1. SJC strung together four hits to produce three runs in the four to widen the gap to 7-1.

A wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth scored Joe Sanguedolce (2-for-3, R) who walked earlier in the inning and after Paul Gugliuzzo (1-for-2, R, RBI) doubled and scored in the bottom of the sixth an RBI single from Nick Vicino (3-for-4, RBI) capped the scoring for the Golden Eagles and moved the game to 10-1.

After the first, SJC starter Kevin Czeczotka kept the Mariners quiet until the seventh when Garrett Clapsaddle knocked in Jared Chambers for their second run of the game before Garrett Aichele grounded into a double play to end the game.

Czeczotka picked up his first win of the season allowing just two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

USMMA's Tyler Reistetter was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs on 13 hits with two Ks.

SJC 14, USMMA 5

In game two, St. Joseph's sent all nine Golden Eagles to the plate and came away with four runs in the bottom of the first.

The Mariners cut the deficit in half courtesy of a two-run home run off the bat of Brayden O'Connell in the top half of the second.

A USMMA run in the third brought the visitors to within one, 4-3, but an RBI single to center from Sanguedolce (2-for-4, R, 3RBI) and a two-RBI double from John Thatcher (2-for-5, R 2RBI) moved the lead back up to four, 7-3.

The Mariners scored two in the up of the fifth but were erased by a two-run homer from Phil Krpata (3-for-6, 3R, 2RBI) in the bottom half of the inning. The Golden Eagles pushed two more runs across in the sixth and three in the seventh to capture the 14-5 win.

Nicholas Dellitalia earned the win allowing just three hits in three shutout innings of relief.

The Golden Eagles return to Gregg Alfano Field on Sunday, March 27 when they host Manhattanville College. Game one is set to start at 11:00 am.
