Baseball Claims a Pair of Wins Over Mt. St. Mary

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) claimed its third Skyline Conference sweep with 5-0 and 14-9 wins over Mt. St. Mary College at Gregg Alfano Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles improve to 7-4 on the season and remain unbeaten in Skyline action at 6-0. The Knights even out at 8-8 overall, 4-2 Skyline.

Game One: SJC 5, MSMC 0

The Golden Eagles jumped to an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI single from John Thatcher (1-for-3, RBI) in the bottom of the fourth brought in Joe Sanguedolce (2-for-3, R) who tripled to start the inning moving the score to 3-0.

Four consecutive singles to start the bottom of the fifth inning resulted in a couple of runs pushing the game to its final 5-0.

SJC's Kevin Czeczotka (W, 2-0) tossed his second consecutive complete game limiting the Knights to just two hits while striking out seven.

MSMC's Mike Scotto took the loss allowing five runs on 12 hits.

Game Two: SJC 14, MSMC 9

The Knights were first to score in game two when Dom Marzigliano hit a solo shot to right in the top of the first. MSMC added two runs in the top of the second to extend the lead to 3-0.

SJC's Nick Vicino (4-for-5, 3 R, 2 RBI) started the bottom half of the second with a double in the right-center gap and came into score on an RBI single by Charles Rainone (4-for-5, 4 R, 4 RBI). The Golden Eagles took advantage of an MSMC defensive miscue scoring two unearned runs to tie the game at three.

Both teams put up a run in the third and stranded a runner in the fourth to head into the fifth knotted at four.

Mt. St. Mary's got back-to-back RBI doubles from Ryan Lutinski and Devin Tait to regain the lead, 7-4, but it was short-lived as Vicino sent an RBI double to centerfield before Rainone blasted a two-run home run to right putting the game back into a stalemate, 7-7.

The Golden Eagles strung together five hits in the bottom half of the sixth and with the help of another MSMC error, SJC pushed across six runs to take their first lead of the game, 13-7.

St. Joseph's tacked on another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth before the Knights plated a pair in the top of the ninth to send the game to its final 14-9.

SJC's Michael Manzolillo (W, 1-0) had a strong showing out of the pen scattering eight hits and allowing just two runs.

The Golden Eagles return to Gregg Alfano Field on Sunday, April 3 when they host Yeshiva University. Game one is slated to start at 11:00 am.
