Baseball Splits with Old Westbury

Farmingdale, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) baseball team salvaged a Skyline Conference split with SUNY Old Westbury on the road on Friday evening. The Golden Eagles (10-6, 9-1 Skyline) suffered an 11-4 loss to the Panthers (7-17, 5-7 Skyline) in game one before coming away with a 10-8 win in the nightcap.

Game One: SJC 4, OW 11

A leadoff triple by Paul Gugliuzzo (3-for-3, 2 R) opened game one and was followed by back-to-back home runs from Joe Sanguedolce (1-for-4, R, 2 RBI) and Brian Forbes (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI) put the Golden Eagles ahead 3-0 in top of the first, but that lead was quickly erased by a three-run home run by OW's Jacob Ford in the bottom half of the inning.

A passed ball in the bottom of the second and a four-run bottom of the third put the Panthers ahead 8-3.

After an OW sacrifice fly in the fifth, the Golden Eagles pushed a run across in the top of the fifth but a run in the bottom half of the fifth and sixth sent the Panthers to an 11-4 win.

SJC's Kevin Yohe (1-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on four hits with a strikeout in one inning. OW's Patrick Quinn earned the win allowing four runs on seven hits in a complete-game effort.

Game Two: SJC 10, OW 8

Three Golden Eagles walked to load the bases to start the top of the second and Hermes Abreu (4-for-4, 2 R, 4 RBI) knocked them all in with a triple to right. John Thatcher (RBI) followed up with a sacrifice fly to left and an RBI double from Forbes a couple of batters later put SJC ahead 5-0.

The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the second and a four-run fourth brought the game even at five.

St. Joseph's batted around in the top of the seventh stringing together five hits for five runs to go ahead 10-5.

Old Westbury plated a run in the bottom of the seventh before scoring two in the eighth, but SJC's Nicholas Dellitalia came in with the bases loaded and retired the final two outs ending the threat. The reliever sat the Panthers down in order in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

SJC's Michael Manzolillo picked up his second win of the season allowing just three runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of relief.

The Golden Eagles resume Skyline Conference play when they travel to face Farmingdale State College on Saturday, April 9. Game one is slated to start at 12:00 pm.
