Baseball Topples Mt. St. Vincent, Advances to Day Two of Skyline Championship
Patchogue, NY| The top-seeded St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team staved off elimination with a 9-1 win over third-seeded Mt. St. Vincent in Game 5 of the Skyline Conference Championship at Gregg Alfano Field on Friday.
The Golden Eagles will face the loser of Game 6 (Saturday, 2:00 pm) between (2) Farmingdale and (4) USMMA in Game 7 (Saturday, 5:00 pm).
The Dolphins were eliminated from the double-elimination tournament.
Brian Forbes (2-for-4) put St. Joseph's ahead in the top of the first when his sac fly scored Phil Krpata (3-for-5), and Ryann Decoursey (3-for-4) doubled the lead later in the inning (2-0) with an RBI single up the middle.
Mt. St. Vincent brought one back in the bottom of the first (2-1), but Krpata reestablished SJLI's two-run lead (3-1) with an RBI single to right.
Decoursey homered to left field in the third, scoring two runs (5-1), and John Thatcher (1-for-3) made it a five-run advantage for the hosts (6-1) with an RBI double to left field.
Forbes and Decoursey drove in runs in the top of the seventh (8-1), and Thatcher tacked on a ninth run (9-1) when he flew out to center field to score Nick Vicino (1-for-4).
Kevin Czeczotka (W, 4-2) struck out 10 batters and allowed one earned run in 8.0 innings of work. Sean Brody fanned one batter in the ninth inning.
