Baseball Sweeps Purchase in Final Skyline Series

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team wrapped up its Skyline Conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep of SUNY Purchase at Gregg Alfano Field on Saturday afternoon.

The wins move the Golden Eagles to 18-11 on the season with a 15-5 Skyline mark. The Panthers slide to 11-21 overall, 7-11 Skyline.

Game One: SJLI 7, Purchase 1

The Golden Eagles got started early with a run in the bottom of the first. Designated hitter John Lynch (3-for-3, R, 3RBI) singled through the right side scoring Paul Gugliuzzo (2-for-4, 2R, RBI) who bunted for a base hit earlier in the inning.

A Purchase field error allowed for RBI singles from Ryan Decoursey (1-for-3, R, 2RBI) and Lynch in the bottom half of the third extending the SJC lead to3-0.

SJLI gave one back in the top of the fourth, but sent eight Golden Eagles to the plate in the fifth highlighted by a Lynch RBI triple to center and put the game out of reach at 7-1.

St. Joseph's starter Kevin Czeczotka (W, 4-2) picked up his fourth win of the season allowing just one unearned run on three hits while striking out five in six innings of work. Ryan Foran tossed a scoreless seventh with one strikeout.

Purchase's Myles Scarry was tagged with the loss allowing seven runs on 10 hits in a complete-game effort.

Game Two: SJLI 10, Purchase 3

After two scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles batted around for seven runs on seven hits including a two-run home run from catcher Hermes Abreu (1-for-3, R, 2RBI). A sac fly off the bat of Brian Forbes (2-for-4, R, 2RBI) and a solo blast from Decoursey (4-for-4, 2R, 2RBI) widened the gap to 9-0 after four innings.

Purchase got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the fifth.

SJLI got the run back in the seventh via a sac fly from John Thatcher (RBI) that scored Nick Vicino (2-for-5, 2R, RBI) who doubled to start the inning, 10-1. The Panthers pushed a couple of runs across in the top of the ninth, but reliever Anthony Cinquemani retired the final two outs via the strikeout to secure the 10-3 victory.

SJLI's Charles Aurandt (W, 4-0) got the win allowing just one hit with five strikeouts.

The Golden Eagles close out the regular season on Sunday, May 1 when they host Lehman College at 12:00 pm.
