The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) baseball team suffered a 4-3 non-conference loss in their season opener at Kean University on Saturday afternoon.

Top performers
  • Junior Joe Sanguedolce went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored

  • Sophomore James Maggio was 2-for-2 

  • Tyler Provost was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Cougars

  • Collin Kiernan picked up the win by tossing seven innings and allowing just two runs with seven strikeouts.

How it happened
  • Scoreless through four innings, the Golden Eagles were first on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. A two-out two-RBI single from Phil Krpata knocked in Anselmo Joya and Joe Sanguedolce who reached to start the inning

  • The Cougars got one back in the bottom half of the inning from an RBI double off the bat of Tyler Stone

  • Three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth put Kean ahead 4-2

  • St. Joseph's cut the deficit to one, 4-3, when Nick Vicino knocked in Ryan Decoursey in the top of the eighth

  • The Golden Eagles had two runners on to start the top of the ninth, but they were left stranded and Kean came away with the 4-3 win

  • The Golden Eagles sent eight pitchers to the mound with senior Ryan Foran getting the start.

  • Senior Michael Manzolillo was tagged with the loss allowing three unearned runs

  • Both teams finished with eight hits with the Golden Eagles swiping four bases to Kean's two

The Golden Eagles return to action when they host Ramapo College for a doubleheader on Saturday, February 25th at 12:00 pm.
