Baseball Splits with Ramapo in Home Opener

St. Joseph's (L.I.), 1-2, Ramapo College, 1-1

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team picked up a non-conference split with Ramapo College in their home opener on Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners came back to take a 7-3 win in game one before the Golden Eagles claimed an 8-0 shutout in game two.

Game one:

Key Players:
  • Senior Ryan Decoursey went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and two RBIs

  • Senior Phil Krpata was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and two stolen bases

  • Junior Joe Sanguedolce finished 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base

  • Senior starting pitcher Ryan Foran tossed three scoreless innings allowing just two hits

  • Jason Cuba, Tyler Guadagno, and Brian Baranok all had two hits for the Roadrunners and combined for four RBIs and three runs scored

How it Happened
  • The Golden Eagles were first on the board with a run in the bottom of the first. Krpata led off with a single through the left side and after swiping second and third, he came into score on an infield single by Decoursey

  • SJLI added another run in the second when Sanguedolce crossed the plate on a bunt base hit by Krpata

  • After two scoreless innings, Rampao's Cuba drove in a pair of runs with a triple to the left-cent gap before coming into score on a wide throw on a pickoff attempt

  • A solo shot over the leftfield fence off the bat of Decoursey in the bottom half of the inning evened the score at 3

  • A pair of Ramapo home runs in the top of the sixth produced three more runs for the visitors for a 6-3 lead

  • The Roadrunners added an insurance run in the seventh before retiring the Golden Eagles in order to claim the 7-3 win

Notes
  • Ramapo's starter Nick Danbrowney earned the win allowing three runs on eight hits with 5.2 innings

  • SJLI's Nicholas Dellitalia was credited with  the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in less than an inning of work

  • Will Paoli picked up the save not allowing a baserunner out of the pen

Game Two

Key Players:
  • Sophomore James Maggio went 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs and a run scored 

  • Krpata finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and another pair of stolen bases

  • Sanguedolce, and senior Nick Vicino all added two hits apiece 

How it Happened:
  • Five Golden Eagle hits aided by a Ramapo defensive miscue led to a quick 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first

  • Decoursey led off the bottom of the second with his second home run of the day before an RBI single to right extended SJLI's advantage to 7-0

  • St. Joseph's added a run in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of an RBI single from Krpata that plated Jake Giannico who singled down the leftfield line earlier in the inning

Notes
  • SJLI starter senior Anthony Cinquemani earned the win allowing just one hit with two strikeouts in three innings of work

  • Sophomore Jack Kelly added three scoreless innings of relief before sophomore Luke Gacovino preserved the shutout stranding three Roadrunners in the seventh

  • Ramapo starter John Higgins was tagged with the loss allowing seven runs on eight hits in two innings

Next up, the Golden Eagles will travel to play at the Ripkin Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC, and face the University of Mary Washington and Cabrini University on Thursday, March 2nd. Game times are set for 2:00 PM and 5:30 PM.
