Baseball Crowned Regular Season Champs for Second Straight Year

St. Joseph's (L.I.), 27-9, 15-5 Skyline; Mt. St. Vincent 23-15, 13-7 Skyline

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team claimed their second straight Skyline Conference regular season title when they split with the College of Mt. St. Vincent on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles had a convincing 23-5 win in game one before dropping game two 9-2.

Game One: SJLI 23,  CMSV 5
Key Players:
  • Junior Joe Sanguedolce was 5-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored and a career-best six RBIs

  • Senior John Thatcher went 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI

  • Graduate Hermes Abreu finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and five runs scored 

  • Starter Ryan Foran tossed a complete game for his second win of the season

How it happened:
  • An RBI double by Abreu and a two-RBI single to center from John Lynch had the Golden Eagles leading 3-0 in the top of the second

  • The Dolphins got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when Dom Porto singled in Jason Albert who was hit by a pitch to start the inning

  • Senior Paul Gugliuzzo drove in a pair of runs with a base hit to right in the top of the third, 5-1

  • Again, the Dolphins managed to push a run across in the bottom half of the inning

  • Sanguedolce blasted a two-run home run in the top of the fourth before CMSV's Johnny Brucato drew a bases-loaded walk moving the score to 7-3

  • Another two-RBI single from Lynch in the top of the fifth had SJLI leading 9-3 before the Golden Eagles exploded for eight runs in the sixth. Sanguedolce started the inning with his second home run of the day. A few batters later, SJLI loaded the bases and after Gugliuzzo was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, senior Jake Giannico pulled a ball to right bringing in two runs. Lynch walked to reload the bases for Sanguedolce who cleared them with a three-RBI double and then came into score on a base hit from senior Nick Vicino.

  • After Foran retired the Dolphins in order in the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Eagles added six more runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead 23-3

  • Mt. St. Vincent pushed two runs across in the bottom of the seventh moving the game to its final 23-5

Notes:
  • As a team, the Golden Eagles recorded a season-best 22 hits 

  • This marks the 27th win of the year for the Golden Eagles which ties the single-season win record set in the 2008 and 2018 seasons

  • SJLI's Foran went the distance allowing five runs on nine hits with a season-high eight strikeouts 

  • CMSV's Andrew Geiger suffered the loss allowing three runs on seven hits in two innings.

Game Two: SJLI 2, CMSV 9
Key Players:
  • Sophomore Anselmo Joya was 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and a run scored

  • Freshman Marco Gullo went 2-for-4

  • Sanguedolce and Thatcher each recorded a hit

How it happened:
  • Scoreless through the first five innings, SJLI's Joya put the Golden Eagles on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth 

  • The Dolphins strung together five hits for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take their first lead of the afternoon, 3-2

  • CMSV then batted around in the bottom of the eighth turning five more hits into six runs putting the game out of reach for the Golden Eagles at 9-2

Notes:
  • St. Joseph's starter junior Peter Manger was tagged with the loss allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings on the mound

  • CMSV's Will Granata picked up the win allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 7.1 innings
