Baseball Splits with USMMA

St. Joseph's (L.I.), 26-8, 14-4 Skyline; USMMA 22-14, 10-8 Skyline

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team split a pair of Skyline Conference contests at the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon. After dropping game one 6-5, the Golden Eagles bounced back to take game two 10-3.

Game One: SJLI 5,  USMMA 6
Key Players:
How it happened:
  • Maggio's solo home run to left put the Golden Eagles on the board in the top of the second

  • USMMA quickly responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning when Ernest Darling tripled to start the inning and came in on a single from Travis Leatherwood 

  • SJLI's Hermes Abreu sparked a two-run top of the third with a one-out double to center. After the Mariners retired Krpata, three consecutive singles from Paul Gugliuzzo, Jake Ginanico, and Lynch put the visitors ahead 3-1 

  • USMMA's Joey Zanetti knocked in two runs to ie the game at 3 with a triple in the left-center gap in the bottom of the fourth

  • Joe Sanguedolce drew a two-out walk in the top of the sixth and was followed by a base hit from Maggio. Nick Vicino sent a single through the right side allowing Sanguedolce to score putting St. Joseph's ahead 4-3.

  • That lead was quickly erased when RBIs from USMMA's Jack Millen and Tyler Reistetter put the Mariners on top 5-4 heading into the seventh

  • Krpata led off the top of the seventh with a home run left evening the score at 5. Later in the inning, Lynch sent a two-out double to left but was stranded with Sanguedolce flew out to center ending the inning

  • USMMA's Garrett Clapsaddle started the bottom half of the inning with a base hit to center before being lifted for pinch runner Derek Vanasse. Vanasse was quickly erased when Giannico made a sliding catch in the right-center gap and was able to double up the pinch runner. Back-to-back walks followed putting two runners on with two-outs for Charles Cahalan who singled to left bringing in pinch-runner Danny Heck for the game-winning run

Notes:
  • USMMA's Tyler Reistetter went the distance allowing five runs on nine hits with five strikeouts to earn his fifth win of the season

  • SJLI's starter sophomore Dante Morabito allowed four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings

  • Anthony Cinquemani was tagged with the loss allowing one run on two hits

Game Two: SJLI 10, USMMA 3
Key Players:
  • Lynch and Giannico both went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored

  • Senior Paul Gugliuzzo finished with two hits and two runs scored 

  • Graduate Hermes Abreu recorded two hits, a run, and an RBI

  • Sophomore Jack Kelly earned the win improving to 5-1 on the season 

How it happened:
  • Leading 2-0 through five innings, SJLI sent eight Golden Eagles to the plate in the top of the sixth. A bases-loaded walk to Vicino followed by RBI singles from Ryan Decoursey and Hermes Abreu put the visitors ahead 5-0 

  • A wild pitch and a sac fly from Maggio added two more runs in the seventh to widen the gap to 7-0

  • The Golden Eagles put up three more runs in the eighth when Giannico drew the game's second bases-loaded walk before an RBI infield single from Lynch and an RBI fielder's choice by Maggio 

  • The Mariners got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the eighth. Cahalan and Zanetti started the inning with a single and double, respectively, and both came in on a couple of groundouts to the Sanguedolce who had just moved over to short

  • USMMA added a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Nick Dellitalia managed to strand a couple of runners getting Zanetti to fly out to left for the final out

Notes:
  • SJLI's Kelly tossed seven scoreless innings before surrendering two in the bottom of the eighth. The sophomore allowed just four hits with seven strikeouts

  • USMMA's Jay Piotrowski was handed the loss allowing two runs on two hits in 3.1 innings of work

Next up, the Golden Eagles wrap up the regular season when they travel to face the College of Mt. St. Vincent in a Skyline Conference matchup on Sunday, May 7 at 12:00 pm.
