Baseball Takes Two From Manhattanville, 7-6, 8-4

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team picked up a couple of Skyline Conference wins on the road at Manhattanville on Saturday afternoon.

Game One: SJLI 7,  Manhattanville 6 (10 innings)
Key Players:
How it happened:
  • St. Joseph's jumped ahead with a run in the opening frame. A sac fly to right off the bat of Maggio brought in Krpata who reached on an error to start the game

  • The Valiants evened the score with a sacrifice fly of their own in the bottom of the third scoring Brian Bornkamp who led off the inning with an infield single

  • St. Joseph's regained the lead in the top of the fourth. The first three Golden Eagles reached to load the bases with no outs when Vicino, Michael Badala, and Krpata all followed with RBI singles to go ahead 5-1

  • Following a scoreless fifth, it was Manhattanville starting the bottom of the sixth with three consecutive singles to load the bases. A wild pitch plated the inning's first run before a double to the left-center gap from M Clara pushed two runs across. 

  • SJLI's Mike Manzolillo came out of the pen and retired the first batter he saw before Manhattaville's Borncamp lifted a ball out center just deep enough for Jordan Wazolek to tag and score tying the game, 5-5 

  • The Golden Eagles retook the lead with a run in the eighth when Vicino came in on a wild pitch after starting the inning with an infield single

  • Manhattanville's Borncamp was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the ninth. After a sac bunt, an infield single put runners on the corners with one out for Michael Musanty who sent a ground ball up the middle where SJLI's Ryan Decoursey was able to get the force out at second, but Borncamp scored on the play to knot the score at 6

  • The Valiants nearly walked it off when Joshua Gillison reached on a defensive miscue, but the Golden Eagles managed to get Musantry in a rundown between home and third before getting tagged out at the plate for the final out of the inning

  • Similar to the up of the eighth, Vicino started the 10th with a single and was moved into scoring position by a sac bunt from Badala. A groundout to the right side moved Vicino up 90 feet and came into score the go-ahead run on a single to left off the bat of Paul Gugliuzzo

  • SJLI's Dante Morabito came out of the pen for the bottom half of the 10th and stranded a lead-off double to secure the 7-6 win

Notes:
  • Sophomore Jack Kelly picked up his third win of the season allowing just one run on one hit with two Ks in three innings of relief

  • Morabito earned his second save on the year 

  • Manhattanville's Sean Demo was handed the loss after allowing a run on two hits in one inning out of the pen

  • St. Joseph's finished with 16 hits to the Valiants' eight

Game Two: SJLI 8, Manhattanville 4
Key Players:
  • Vicino went 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBIs

  • Krpata finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases

  • Gugliuzzo added two hits with a run scored 

How it happened:
  • After both sides pushed a run across in the second, the Golden Eagles went back on top courtesy of an RBI triple to the right-centerfield gap from Jake Giannico

  • Three straight singles to start the fifth resulted in a run for the Golden Eagles. After a pair of SJLI flyouts, a passed ball allowed Gugliuzzo to score and an RBI single from Vicino put St. Joseph's ahead 5-1

  • After the Golden Eagles added a run in the top of the sixth, the Valiants came back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to close the gap to just two, 6-4

  • Two runs in the top of the seventh provided some breathing room for the Golden Eagles as Morabito pitched around a leadoff single in the home half of the inning to pick up his second save of the afternoon.

Notes:
  • SJLI starter Anthony Cinquemani surrendered just one run on three hits with two Ks and improves to 6-0 on the season

  • Manhattanville's Ray White took the loss allowing five runs on five hits in four innings of work

  • The Golden Eagles finished with nine hits with the Valiants finishing with seven
