Baseball Completes Sweep With Two Victories over Neumann University

St. Joseph's (L.I.), 5-2, Neumann University, 1-2

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team picked up two non-conference victories on Friday against Neuman University. The Golden Eagles scored six runs in the sixth inning to claim game one before the Golden Eagles again scored 10 runs in the third to give SJLI a pair of victories. 

Game one:

Key Players:
  • Senior John Lynch went 1-3 at the plate, with a home run and three RBIs 

  • Senior Ryan Decoursey was 1-3, with one RBI off a single to SS

  • Senior Jake Giannico finished 2-3 with one run scored 

  • Junior Andrew Monda recorded seven innings pitched, with three strikeouts and allowing three hits and one earned run

  • Shawn Vega and Ryan Lopez of Neumann, each went 1-3 at the plate with Lopez adding one RBI

How it Happened
  • The Knights started out strong with Vega recording a single to left field for the game's first at-bat. Vega would soon advance to second on a wild pitch and also move to third after Brandon Colon ground out to third. Vega would come home and score after Lopez singled to the field. 

  • The Golden Eagles would remain scoreless until the sixth inning where Giannico would lead off with a single up, Paul Gugliuzzo singled with a bunt sending Giannico to third, after a wild pitch advanced Giannico to second

  • Decoursey would provide a much-needed boost for SJLI with a single sending Giannico home and giving the Golden Eagles their first score of the game, tying the game at one apiece 

  • Shortly after Lynch would hit a three-run home run over the right field wall to give St. Joseph's their first lead of the game

Notes
  • Jonathon Baker received a loss for pitching six innings, allowing five hits and 4 earned runs. 

  • Monda threw 52 strikes on 78 pitches, while Baker threw 49 strikes on 81 pitches 

  • Lopez and Colon each had one stolen base on the day 

Game Two

Key Players:
  • Sophomore James Maggio went 4-5, with one home run and 2RBIs

  • Freshman Derek Masino recorded two hits and walked twice with one RBI

  • Decoursey finished 2-3 with two doubles and three RBIs

  • Senior Phil Krpata added two runs and one RBI, going 1-2 at the plate, with a single and two walks

  • The Knights' Vega scored two runs and one RBI going 1-2 at the plate, being walked once 

How it Happened:
  • Vega would lead off the game as he got on base immediately after being hit by a pitch. Vega would advance to second on a groundout, then proceeded to steal third base and advance home on an error from SJLI

  • The Golden Eagles would tie the game in the bottom of the first with Maggio hitting a homerun over the left field wall

  • The top of the second saw the Knights' Tyler Kilmer single to center field before Vega singled to left field bringing Kilmer home for Neumann to take the lead again.

  • Later in the inning, Vega would steal second as Colon would be hit by a pitch. This would lead to a Lopez single into center field as Vega scores and Colon advances to third.

  • Peter Manger of the Golden Eagles would come into finish the inning as Lopez would be thrown at 2nd base and caught trying to steal

  • The Golden Eagles would put together a monster inning in the bottom of the third scoring 10 runs. Krpata would lead the inning by being walked, followed by a Maggio single through the left side. A Decoursey double would bring home both Krpata and Maggio.

  • Decoursey would come home to score after a wild pitch advanced him to third on a sacrifice flyout by Lynch. 

  • Back-to-back hits from Anselmo Joya and Giannico set up Thomas gray to bring home the runners on base with a single up the middle. A single from Masino would see a pitching change for the Neumann. 

  • A single from Michael Badala would load the bases for the Golden Eagles but would see Gray score from third and runners advance on a wild pitch. A Krpata single and a Decoursey double would see the final runs score for SJLI.

  • Masino would single would bring home Joe Hackal for another score for St. Joseph's in the bottom of the fifth inning. 

Notes
  • SJLI's Manger picked up the win for the Golden Eagles

  • St. Joseph's went 7-14 with runners in scoring position

  • The Golden Eagles had a .556 strike percentage

  • SJLI recorded 15 hits compared to the Knight's five
