Baseball Picks up a Pair from Purchase, 6-2, 11-2

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team took home a pair of Skyline Conference wins from SUNY Purchase on Saturday afternoon.

Game One: SJLI 6,  Purchase 2
Key Players:
  • Senior Ryan Decoursey went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored

  • Senior Jake Giannico finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs

  • Sophomore starter Jake Kelly improved to 4-0 on the season allowing just two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts

How it happened:
  • A pair of RBI singles from John Lynch and Joe Sanguedolce along with a defensive miscure by the Panthers resulted in a 3-0 lead for the Golden Eagles in the top of the first

  • Purchase got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the second

  • A solo home run from Patrick Reyes to start the bottom of the fourth cut the Panther deficit in half, 4-2

  • St. Joseph's strung together three hits in the top of the sixth before an unearned run in the top of the seventh moved the game to its final 6-2

Notes:
  • Purchase's Myles Scarry took the loss allowing six runs (three earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts 

  • SJLI's Dante Morabito tossed a scoreless inning of relief without allowing a hit

Game Two: SJLI 11, Purchase 2 (10 innings)
Key Players:
  • Sophomore Anselmo Joya went 3-for-4 with a run scored 

  • Decoursey added two more hits to his day with a couple of runs scored and an RBI

  • Paul Gugliuzzo and John Lynch added two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored

  • Senior Michael Manzolillo earned the with four innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts

How it happened:
  • The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the third when Hermes Abreu singled through the left side and came into score on a sac fly by Gugliuzzo

  • Purchase took their first lead of the day when Scarry walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth and came in on a triple to center by Liam Daly. A few pitches later Daly scored on a wild pitch to put the Panthers ahead 2-1

  • After a scoreless fifth, a couple of singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases to start the top half of the sixth. A sacrifice fly by Joe Sanguedolce brought home Decoursey tying the score at 2 before a double play ended the threat

  • Both sides were retired in order in the seventh and the eighth before the Golden Eagles had runners on second and third with two outs in the ninth, but PC's Jonathan Uzzo got Abreu to fly out to center for the final out of the inning

  • A one-out single by Louis Carvell gave the Panthers a baserunner in the ninth, but Manzolillo got Sam Saltzman to ground into an inning-ending double play sending the game into extra innings

  • St. Joseph's batted around in the top of the 10th sending 13 Golden Eagles to the plate. Phil Krpata led off the inning with a single through the right side sparking a nine-hit, nine-run inning. Lynch and Sanguedolce knocked in two runs while Decoursey, Chris Lettiere, Gugliuzzo, and Tom Gray all recorded RBIs

  • Manzolillo pitched around a leadoff single in the bottom half of the 10th to secure the 11-2 win

Notes:
  • SJLI starter Anthony Cinquemani surrendered just two runs on four hits with five Ks

  • Purchase's Uzzo suffered the loss allowing four runs on five hits in one inning of relief

Next up, the Golden Eagles will host John Jay College for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, April 18 at 4:00 pm.
