#1 Baseball Advances to Championship Game with 10-6 Win Over #2 Maritime

Results:

The top-seeded St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team advanced to the Championship game of the Skyline Conference tournament with a 10-6 win over #2 SUNY Maritime at Gregg Alfano Field on Saturday afternoon.

Key Players:
  • Senior Pil Krpata went 5-for-5 with four runs scored, three RBIs, and three stolen bases

  • Senior Ryan Decoursey went 2–for-4 with an RBI and a run scored

  • Senior Jake Giannico finished 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a run scored

  • SJLI's starter Peter Manger improved to 6-0 

How it happened:
  • St. Joseph's scored first when Krpata started the bottom of the first inning with a double in the left-center gap and came in to score on a sac fly by Jake Giannico

  • The Golden Eagles added a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second to go ahead 3-0

  • Maritime's Freddy Forgione put the Privateers on the board with a two-run blast to left in the top of the third

  • A base hit to left by James Maggio scored Ryan Decoursey who was hit by a pitch to start the bottom half of the third. A sac fly by Nick Vicino brought in John Lynch who doubled earlier in the inning

  • A solo home run by Krpata started the bottom of the fourth and put the Golden Eagles ahead 6-2

  • The Privateers strung together four hits in the top of the sixth and cut the deficit to just two, 6-4

  • The Golden Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Krpata legged out an infield hits and a stole second to move into scoring position. A Maritime defensive miscue brought him home and allowed Paul Gugliuzzo to reach. Giannico pulled an RBI double down the right field line before scoring on a hit through the left side by Decoursey, 9-4

  • St. Joseph's added some insurance in the eighth when Krpata led off with a single to center and came in to score on a sac fly by Giannico

  • Maritime made some noise in the top of the ninth when Forgione belted his second two-run home run of the afternoon. A couple of hits from Rob Copozzi and Jaden Shea followed but they were left stranded as SJLI's reliever Dante Morabito got Randy Ventura to ground out to end the game

Notes:
  • Manger went 5.2 innings allowing four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts

  • Maritime's Brandon Stanley was handed the loss surrendering nine runs on eight hits with three strikeouts

Next up, the Golden Eagles advance and will face the winner of #2 SUNY Maritime and #6 Purchase College on Sunday, May 13 at 11:00 am.
