Baseball Drops NCAA Opener to Top-Seeded Cortland

The fourth-seeded St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team dropped game one of the NCAA Div. III New York State Regional to top-seeded SUNY Cortland 9-2 on Friday morning at Wallace Field.

How it happened:
  • Cortland got on the board early with a run in the bottom of the second when Matthew Krafft beat out an infield hit and came into score on a  Hunter Holliday sacrifice bunt

  • The hosts added three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third taking a 4-0 lead

  • A couple of Red Dragons were hit by a pitch with one out in the fourth setting up an RBI single to left by Adam Mieczkowski to put Cortland ahead 5-0

  • St. Joseph's broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Sanguedolce was hit by a pitch to start the inning and a couple batters later advanced to third on a base hit to right by Krpata. Gugliuzzo followed up with a double ripped down the right field line bringing in both runners and moving the score to 5-2.

  • The Golden Eagles threatened in the sixth with two on with two outs, but Cortland's shortstop Andrew Michalski went behind the second base bag and gunned down Vicino for the final out of the inning

  • Cortland added a run in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a solo home run to left by Mat Bruno and three more in the eighth moving the game to its final 9-2 

Notes:
  • Cortland's Dylan Beers picked up the win surrendering just two runs on two hits with nine strikeouts in 5.2 innings

  • SJLI's starter Jack Kelly was handed the loss allowing five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work

Next up, the Golden Eagles will face the loser of game two's second-seeded Ithaca College and third-seeded Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday, May 20 at 8:30 am.
