Baseball Drops Two to Maritime

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team suffered a pair of Skyline Conference losses at the hands of SUNY Maritime on Friday afternoon.

Game One: SJLI 3,  Maritime 4

Key Players:

How it happened:
  • The Privateers scored first when Matt Milone blasted a two-run home run to left in the top of the first

  • St. Joseph's got on back in the bottom half of the inning when Phil Krpata led off the inning with an infield single and came in to score on a sac fly to center by Jake Giannico

  • Maritime strung together three hits in the top of the second producing a pair of runs to go ahead 4-1

  • Decoursey's solo shot in the bottom of the fourth cut the SJLI deficit in half, 4-2

  • Krpata was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the seventh and after stealing second, he came in to score on a single to center by Giannico. Maritime's Matt Demme got Decoursey to ground into a double play to end the game

Notes:
  • Maritime's starter Demme earned the win allowing three runs on nine hits 

  • Peter Manger allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 6.1 innings of relief

  • SJLI's Anthony Cinquemani suffered his first loss of the season

Game Two: SJLI 5, Maritime 7

How it happened:
  • The Golden Eagles were first to score in game two when three consecutive hits from Lynch, Sanguedolce, and Vicino resulted in a 2-0 lead

  • Maritime erased that lead in the top of the third with RBIs from Forgione and Milone

  • The Privateers batted around for six hits including three doubles in the top of the fourth bringing in five runs to jump ahead 7-2

  • Sanguedolce's solo shot in the bottom of the sixth moved the score to 7-3

  • After a quiet seventh and eighth, the Golden Eagles made some noise in the bottom of the ninth. Vicino started the inning with a base hit up the middle and moved into scoring position on a ground out. Hermes Abreu doubled down the right field line scoring Vicino. Two batters later, a two-out RBI single up the middle from Gugliuzzo brought home Abreu inching St. Joseph's to within two, 7-5, but Maritime's Jack Kellner got Giannico to lineout to right ending the threat

Notes:
  • SJLI's Jack Kelly was credited with the loss allowing seven runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings

  • Reliever Dante Morabito surrendered just two hits with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings of scoreless relief

  • Maritime's Brandon Stanley improved to 7-2 on the season allowing three runs on nine hits in seven innings on the mound

Next up, the Golden Eagles will host Steven Tech in a non-conference contest on Monday, May 1 at 4:00 pm.
